In August, Van Gogh worked on a few motifs that may seem a bit uncharacteristic in his oeuvre. But he didn’t have to go far to find this scene: the quay on the left bank of the Rhône river was just a few steps away from his studio.

Two months later, he sent the painting to his friend Émile Bernard: 

“…  I believe that that one will suit you once you’ve looked at it a little longer”. (Letter 698)

Bernard kept the painting an showed it in 1892 in an exhibition organized in memory of van Gogh who had died two years previously.
